This project provides tuition to train 32 students at a time in construction skills: masonry, electricity, carpentry for use in rebuilding damaged areas after the 7.8 magnitude Ecuadorean earthquake on April 16th. Yachana is helping young people directly impacted by this disaster by giving them skills and certification and a way to contribute to rebuilding their communities. Each course focuses on different construction skills, offered to new students.
Ecuador experienced a devastating earthquake that registered 7.8 on the Richter scale on Saturday April 16th. This caused significant damage along the northern coast of Ecuador and more than 600 people died. Thousands more were displaced and/or are missing. Homes, buildings, infrastructure and roads are damaged or destroyed. Immediate help is vital and greatly appreciated, but the Yachana Foundation is looking for a solution with a longer-term perspective in order to provide assistance.
Yachana will be working in conjunction with National Organization of Tradesmen (NOT), who is providing training for youth from the affected areas of the earthquake. Students at Yachana will be provided with basic training in construction skills: masonry, carpentry, electricity, etc. that can be used in the restoration of the damaged areas. For each student from the coastal region Yachana will provide food, lodging, and materials for training for youths participating in the NOT program.
By funding this project the Yachana Training Center can provide the infrastructure and learning-living campus for training youths from coastal Ecuador in the skills needed for disaster recovery that are critical to the rebuilding of their region. Graduating students will receive a certificate from Yachana and the NOT at the completion of the 16 day training course; thus providing them a better opportunity to secure work during this critical time of reconstruction after the 2016 earthquake.
