Keep North Fulton Beautiful operates the Sandy Springs Recycling Center as a community drop off for household recycling. This project will create media to educate the citizens of the North Metro Atlanta area on best practices for community recycling and will ensure citizens' engagement is met with ample support and clean updated facilities via the Sandy Springs Recycling Center.
Less than half of recyclable materials in homes in the United States are being recycled. In our community alone, only 50% of residents even utilize curbside recycling. Few multi-family dwellings offer recycling services, yet they comprise 20-30% of our community. The Sandy Springs Recycling Center helps to cover this deficit by offering a community drop-off facility. However, we need to ensure that residents who do recycle with us bring only materials that are able to be recycled.
After 36 years serving the community, we have established a robust local network composed of avid recyclers, casual enthusiasts, and civic leaders. We hope to retain these dedicated customers and use them to reach out to new audiences who are unaware of our facility. Our instructional materials and media outreach will increase the rate of recycling by targeting untapped audiences while decreasing the number of unrecyclable materials as our outreach will explain the importance of recycling right.
By increasing the number of active recyclers, we will, potentially, be able to keep hundreds of additional tons a year out of local landfills. Our educational outreach will help us continue to support our community in its waste reduction efforts by demonstrating the importance of recycling to protect natural resources. Updating our facility and equipment will ensure we are functioning at full capacity to aid in these environmental efforts.
