44,320 girls and young women die each year fromFGM/C-related complications, according to research byGhosh, Flowe,and Rockey¹.This

analysed data from15 African countries over three decades (1990-2020).

This positions Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C)as the 4th  leading cause of death among girls and young women in these countries, exceeded only by enteric infections, respiratory infections,andmalaria.Yet,unlike these diseases, FGM/C is intentional and preventable.

The implications of this new data are profound, calling for afundamental shift in how we

understand and address FGM/C.

It necessitates reframing FGM/C from a harmful traditional practice to a pandemic of violence and a critical public health emergency

The evidence demands a global shift in responding to FGM/C. UNFPA (2022) estimates $2.75 billion is needed to end the practice in 31 high prevalence countries by 2030 yet only $300 million has been allocated³⁴. With a girl dying every 12 minutes from FGM/C related complications, the issue needs to be pushed to the forefront of the global agenda demanding stronger commitment to eliminate FGM/C and an urgent increase in interventions and funding

The International Day of Zero Tolerance for female genital mutilation (FGM), observed annually on 6 February, provides an opportunity for all stakeholders involved in ending FGM to celebrate achievements, advocate for abandonment of the practice and raise awareness. 

This year, with the theme Her Voice. Her Future. Investing in Survivor-Led Movements to End Female Genital Mutilation, there is a focus on survivors who are contributing to the global movement to end this harmful practice. 

Female Genital Mutilation/Cut is the worst form of gender based violence against women/girls.

We advocate against FGM/C. We believe in health of our women and girls.
We support SRHR of girls and women.

FGM/C in Kenya is 15% – we target Tharaka Community where 56% of women/girls Undergo FGM/ C and in Nairobi where 8% of girls Undergo FGM/C.

We conduct SRHR workshop in schools and villages to sensitize both men and women about dangers of FGM/C. Our advocacy against FGM/C is to end FGM/C.
