Blue Cross Kenya operates a total of 5 base camps that are running in the settlements of Kibos, Manyatta, Nyalenda A, Nyalenda B and Railways in Obunga, open from Monday to Saturday. These camps provide young people with a chance to have fun, interact and talk with trusted adults, socialize with friends, and try new acitvities. The activities range from playing games to creating art.
Addititonally, the camps regularly host discussions on environment conservation, including garbage disposal, cleaning, and tree planting. Girls also have the opportunity to discuss sexual reproductive health, covering topics such as menstrual hygiene and changes in the female body.
The Nyalenda base camp has recently ensured a safe space for children and youth, especially after the area was affected by prolonged flooding. With school holidays extended due to the heavy rains and flooding impacting the country, the Nyalenda base camp has been engaging children and youth in various activities. The team and staff are dedicated to maintaining the camp as a secure place for young people in Nyalenda. Providing young people with a safe space is important because it allows them to interact with their peers, build friendships, explore new interests, and develop a sense of community and belonging.
