As National Prevention Week begins, Blue Cross Kenya joined NACADA Kenya for an outreach visit to Ayiecho Nyatao Secondary School in Muhoroni, Kisumu County. The purpose was clear: to inspire and empower students toward a brighter future, in line with the Prevention Week 2026 theme.
A school community ready to learn
In conversations with learners and during the session, one thing stood out immediately: the students were curious, engaged, and eager to understand how alcohol and drug use can affect their lives, their health, and their goals. They asked thoughtful questions, listened closely, and showed real interest in how to protect themselves and support their friends.
Honest, age-appropriate guidance
The team of Blue Cross Kenya shared factual, student-friendly information about alcohol and drug abuse; what it is, how it starts, and why prevention matters early. Just as importantly, there were conversations about what to do if someone is already affected: where to seek help, who to talk to, and how to take the first step without shame.
Students were encouraged to use the school’s counseling unit as a safe place for support and guidance, because prevention isn’t only about saying “no,” but also about knowing you don’t have to face challenges alone.
Why these moments matter
For many young people, a single conversation can be a turning point. When students receive clear information, trusted support pathways, and encouragement from caring adults, they gain more than knowledge - they gain confidence, hope, and tools for life.
Outreach visits like this help strengthen protective factors around young people: informed choices, supportive school environments, and communities that stand with them.
With your support, Blue Cross can continue reaching more schools, more students, and more families - helping young people grow up safer, stronger, and full of possibility.
