Project Update: Improving Nutrition for 2,000 Children in Uganda
The project to improve nutrition for 2,000 children in Uganda is progressing well. Working with a children"s home, 600 households and 2 primary schools, we have already reached 1,650 children through a weekly food rescue and food banking program that provides balanced meals made from locally sourced ingredients. The initiative is helping to reduce hunger during school hours and improve children’s concentration and attendance rates.
In addition to the feeding program, we have trained 120 caregivers and 25 teachers on proper child nutrition, hygiene, and meal preparation. we have formed community structure to promote food savings that supplement school meals and demonstrate sustainable farming practices. Early health assessments show encouraging results, with a 15% reduction in moderate malnutrition among participating children.
Despite these successes, the project faces challenges such as climate change, limited access to clean water in some schools, and lack of transport means to collect and transport food from market to household beneficiaries. also facilitating volunteers during food rescue and distribution is a hinderance to our effectiveness. These factors have occasionally affected supply consistency. However, our local partnerships with HABA NA HABA and community involvement have been key in finding short-term solutions.
In the next phase, we plan to extend the feeding program to reach 5000 children, strengthen school water systems in collaboration with local NGOs, and continue monitoring children’s growth and dietary diversity. Overall, the project is on track to meet its goals and is already making a meaningful impact on the health and well-being of children and their communities.
