Cyclones and reforestation

This is a very different and difficult report to write. It illustrates another dimension of challenges for our reforestation efforts.

November to April, or the summer, is cyclone season for the southern Africa or Indian Ocean part of the world. Madagascar unfortunately gets hit, often more than once a year by cyclones this time of the year. With an island that is 1600 km or 1000 miles long, the chances that some part of the country will be hit by a cyclone is likely.

On January 31, we got the message via WhatsApp, (the main form of communication with Madagascar) that read: “A reforestation with the newly elected mayor, in the mountain of Bevato for today has been canceled to avoid any problem as the yellow alert due to cyclone Iarivo was on”

Note: the town where the mayor is based is called Bevato, a name it shares with the big mountain in the area by the same name. Our water for the village of Fiadanana also comes from a spring of the mountain ‘Bevato’.

Unfortunately, any meeting with the mayor in the near future is highly unlikely because another cyclone Gezani, expected to make landfall on February 10 is on its way. The cone of uncertainty, as it is called in weather language, unfortunately, could impact our region this time directly.
