Spring 2026 Uganda Refurb Wells Interim Report

Suubi Community Projects Uganda (SCPU) continues to demonstrate the power of community-led solutions in transforming access to safe water in rural Uganda. In Butakoola Village, Kayunga District, SCPU successfully refurbished a long-broken borehole that had left 1,050 residents without reliable access to clean water for nearly four years. During this time, families were forced to rely on unsafe swamp and surface water sources located more than 4 kilometers away, exposing them to serious health risks. Through this intervention, safe and clean water has been restored directly within the community, significantly improving daily life and reinforcing SCPU’s commitment to sustainable, locally driven development.

The impact of this work extends far beyond water access alone. With the borehole now operational, community members are saving an average of two hours each day previously spent collecting water, allowing more time for farming, small businesses, and family care. Children are expected to attend school more regularly, while improved hygiene practices—such as handwashing—are helping to reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases like diarrhea and typhoid. The project has also enhanced safety, particularly for women and girls who previously faced risks traveling long distances for water. By restoring a nearby, reliable source, SCPU has helped create a healthier, safer, and more productive environment for the entire village.

Central to SCPU’s approach is building long-term sustainability through community ownership and capacity development. A local Water User Committee has been established and trained to manage, maintain, and finance the borehole, ensuring it remains functional for years to come. Inclusive participation—incorporating women, youth, and people with disabilities—strengthens governance and accountability, while ongoing training in maintenance and hygiene reinforces lasting impact. Through this model, Suubi Community Projects Uganda is not only restoring water systems but empowering communities with the knowledge, skills, and responsibility to sustain them, creating enduring change well beyond the life of the project.
