Winter 2024 Uganda Refurb Wells Interim Report

By Tom Webber | U.S. Development Director

BridgIT continues to work hard to bring safe, clean water to rural villagers in Central Uganda. Since 2015, BridgIT has built over 300 projects in the Mukono District such that have brought potable water to over 700,000 people. When we started in 2015, only about 40% of the people in Mukono had access to safe water, whereas now over 95% of people have accessible well water near their homes. So BridgIT is moving on to the adjacent Kayunga District to replicate this success.

BridgIT’s well refurbishment fundraiser on GlobalGiving had an excellent quarter. Thanks to our generous supporters, we were able to raise $4,500, which is enough to refurbish 3 broken water wells. In other words, thanks to your philanthropy, members of 500 households will no longer have to walk miles to collect dirty surface water. These approximately 3,000 people greatly appreciate their repaired well. Thank you so much.

Access to clean drinking water changes everything:

  • Water in the village means women and children have less than 500 meters to lug water, whereas before it was miles
  • Community health improves immediately
  • Household economies improve because medical expenses drop and women can use the time saved in productive work
  • Children can spent more time in school improving educational outcomes
  • Gender equality improves when women can work and girls can attend school instead of walking miles for their daily water needs

The math is clear on these refurbished wells. It only costs about US$1.50/beneficiary to provide Ugandan villagers with potable water that greatly reduces the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever, dysentery and diarrhea. Together, let’s repair more broken wells in the Kayunga District!
