Grupo Puntacana Foundation will utilize an innovative and highly efficient hydroponic agricultural system to provide fresh, organic produce to the local Punta Cana community. The system will be used as a showcase for local farmers to learn about regenerative agriculture and to generate revenue for the Foundation's diverse environmental programs.
Traditional agricultural practices in the eastern DR require large amounts of land, water fertilizers and often degrade soils.
Using an innovative hydroponics system, we will produce large quantities of crops in a small space while continuously reusing water and limiting the need for chemical fertilizers. We will also use a small portion of the greenhouse space to grow seedlings of endemic and endangered plants from the Dominican Republic. These trees will be selectively planted to support beneficial insects, pollinators, and crop growth.
The project hopes to continue existing efforts to train, encourage and create replication projects with local farmers. The Foundation has a long history using our farm as a demonstration site for local communities and farmers.
