ADOL Health Care Initiative aims to rehabilitate 400 visually impaired primary pupils in 8 schools in Karamoja sub-region, Uganda. Karamoja being the least developed part of Uganda does not have a Low Vision Rehabilitation centre. The project will train Low Vision Therapists, screen and assess pupils for low visual rehabilitation. The 400 pupils will be facilitated with low vision devices to enable them complete school and live a complete dignified life like the rest.
Armed cattle rustling in Karamoja scared away services providers from the region. Unlike other regions of Uganda, Karamoja does not have a Low Vision Rehabilitation centre. Over 6,750 school going children suffer from low vision without any attention. As a result, 50% of these children drop out of school annually because there are no facilities including schools for visually impaired children to motivate them continue with their education. Children have lost hope in life thus their dark future.
5 ADOL Staff, 24 teachers and 8 school management will be trained in screening, assessment and monitoring low vision cases. The targeted 400 pupils will be screened, assessed and sights rehabilitated. The staff will conduct continuous monitoring while teachers and school management will ensure school retention of these pupils. Pupils will be facilitated with low vision devices for vision improvement.
The goal of the project is to rehabilitate 400 visually impaired pupils in 8 schools to enable them complete school and live a dignified life. These rural-poor pupils will be facilitated with low vision devices since they cannot afford. As a result, they will complete school and have equal opportunities to participate in every aspect of society, including employment and leisure activities. In the long run, this program will help the visually impaired gain integration into the society again.
