While the world praises Uganda for its stunning landscape and vibrant culture, the harsh reality is that many children in the country are exposed to traumatic experiences that rob them of their innocence and dignity
Sexual violence against children with disabilities remains a hidden crisis concealed by a veil of silence stigma and fear. It takes many forms from rape and exploitation to child marriage and female genital mutilation.
Children with disabilities are 3 to 4 times more likely to experience sexual violence other than other children which significantly increase greater risks making them more vulnerable to sexual violence:
Many children with disabilities rely on others for daily care and support, which can make them more vulnerable to abuse.
Some children with disabilities have limited communication abilities, making it difficult to report abuse.
Social stigma and discrimination can worsen the vulnerability of children with disabilities, as they may be perceived as less credible or less capable of self-defense.
Despite the challenges Joy for Children-Uganda (JFCU) has worked tirelessly to address this issue through many ways.
We conducted training and awareness campaigns to educate children with disabilities, their families, and caregivers about sexual violence, its signs, and the importance of reporting.
JFCU established safe spaces where children with disabilities can access counseling and support. These spaces also provide a platform for children to express their concerns.
We advocated for policy changes and provide legal support to ensure that perpetrators of sexual violence are brought to justice.
We collaborated with local authorities, healthcare providers, and other organizations to ensure that children with disabilities receive comprehensive care and support.
JFCU offered training to professionals working with children with disabilities, including caregivers, teachers, and healthcare workers, on how to prevent and respond to sexual violence.
While the challenge of addressing sexual violence against children with disabilities is complex, JFCU has observed several positive outcomes which include, increased awareness and reporting of sexual violence cases, improved access to support services for children with disabilities, greater advocacy for the protection of children with disabilities, leading to policy changes,
