Challenge

In Uganda, one million children in a year struggle with cerebral palsy (CP) and associated poor nutrition and development, multiple medical complications, and early death. CP results from damage to a developing brain before, during, or after birth and the child has a mental and physical disability of movement, balance, and posture. Required multi-disciplinary medical care, treatment, and rehabilitation services are limited to referral hospitals and not easily accessed by families.

Solution

To implement a peer-led community Family Rehabilitative Training Program (FRP) to empower 300 CP family caregivers in multi-disciplinary rehabilitation skills in the local communities of Kawempe Division and in Kamuli, district. The children's mothers will be trained in rehabilitation techniques and child development. Medical care, counseling, and treatment will be provided for children with convulsions. A child development center will be established where children will be assessed and enrolled

Long-Term Impact

This project will educate 300 caretakers on how to support children with cerebral palsy which will allow them to rise from depression, and poverty, prevent children from becoming deformed and hence allow them to learn how to be independent, and improve their physical, functional, and developmental outcomes. Providing a child development center, will support sustainable development in the area and improve access to these rehabilitation services.

This project has provided additional documentation in a DOCX file (projdoc.docx).
