- This project will improve access to clean drinking water situation in this community approximately 300 persons - It will improve health status of the community - There will be improved management of the water point.
In Mumias East, most households rely on boreholes and shallow wells fitted with handpumps. Currently, most of these wells that were fitted with nira handpumps ceased functioning. Nira handpump technology is obsolete in Kenya with no supply chain. Emakhwale community has been struggling to repair their Nira handpump through local technology until the pump had a catastrophic failure after thirty years of service to the community.
We propose to install an Afridev hand-pump that is locally appropriate. Since the borehole has been out of use for over two years, we propose to flash to clear debris and blockages and unclog the screened casings. The rehabilitated well will enable the community to have access to reliable water. Also, they will have a reliable handpump that will be easier for them to maintain and service in case of breakages.
Six out of ten children under five years diagonised with diarrhoea in Emakhwale community, will have a reprieve due to access to clean and reliable drinking water.
