International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3) is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992. It has been seen all across the world but to varied degrees of success. The day is observed to raise awareness of disability issues and rally support for the rights dignity and well-being of individuals with disabilities. Additionally, it aims to raise public understanding of the benefits that come with integrating people with disabilities into all facts of political, social, economic, and cultural life.
Since its foundation in 1994, Patan CBR has encountered numerous obstacles in its effort to protect the rights and advancement of children with disabilities. On the occasion of the 32nd international disability day 2023. Lalitpur Metropolitan City organized a program that involved 28 organizations that operate in the disability field in Lalitpur district with their parents, the children from every department in the organization appeared incredibly enthusiastic about the day. Our rally with 40 members including children with disabilities, parents, members, and other well-wishers began in Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Pulchowk. We all gathered and started at 9 am. We ended our rally at Mangal Bazar (Patan Durbar Square). The special guests who attended the program included: the major, the deputy mayor, the chief of the women's development unit, and the chief of the Mangalbazar police office. Afterward, we moved to a Patan museum and the Golden Temple.
The history museum and Patan Durbar Square scheduled are made by Lalitpur metropolitan city. The museum is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The program was excellently organized. All rally participants were offered seats as our rally came to a finish at Mangal Bazar. The program started with a short introduction speech. Deaf people was communicated by a sign language interpreter. We ate lunch and then started walking in the direction of the museum. Ramps were arranged for those with physical disabilities. They assisted in entering the museum by the ramp. The historical art facts pleased them. Our guide assisted us and provided us with information on the history of the Patan, both art and architecture. People with disabilities visited the historical site for the first time and this was Nepal’s first publicly accessible museum established as an independent organization.
The event was quite successful in conveying the message that disability is also a part of our society. They have the right to know about culture and history. Around 12.30 we finished our museum tour. With this event, we created beautiful memories with a person with disabilities. We enjoyed our day with joy. The message is that people with disabilities are part of our society. Everyone was ecstatic to be part of this initiative program. They got the opportunity to tour historical sites and learn more about our culture.
