Releasing Rehabilitated Condors in Patagonia

By Florencia Asquet | Florencia Asquet

On January 15, 2026, three Andean condors—Carmen, Auquinco, and Farellón—were released into the wild in Patagonia National Park, marking an important milestone for our Andean Condor Rehabilitation Program.

The three condors arrived at the park in October 2025 and spent nearly three months in an acclimatization enclosure in the Chacabuco Valley. This period allowed them to gradually adapt to their new surroundings before taking flight. Prior to their release, each bird was fitted with satellite and VHF transmitters, enabling our team to closely monitor their movements, adaptation, and progress in the wild.

Each condor has a unique story. Carmen was born in December 2023 at a rehabilitation center, while Auquinco was rescued in Chile’s Los Ríos Region in 2024. Farellón, born in the wild, was rescued in the Andes after suffering a fracture. Their return to the skies represents the culmination of months of rehabilitation, care, and preparation.

The release was carried out through Proyecto Manku, a collaborative initiative led by Fundación Rewilding Chile, Filantropía Cortés Solari, and Aves Chile/UNORCH, together with public agencies and conservation partners. It also brought together local communities from Chile Chico and Cochrane, students, authorities, and international conservation partners from Colombia.

Beyond returning three condors to the wild, this milestone contributes to a larger effort to strengthen Andean condor populations and connectivity throughout the Andean Corridor. Thanks to the support of our donors and partners, Carmen, Auquinco, and Farellón now have a second chance to soar free over Patagonia.
