Challenge

Pakistan's lockdown disproportionately burdens HIV-positive transgender youth, as they have limited access to basic nutritional goods and medical supplies. Transgender workers, who commonly make a living through sex work and/or performance dancing, have lost their source of income and are being forced under the poverty line, where they become especially vulnerable to basic, COVID-19-related, and HIV-related health risks. Without hunger and medical relief supplies, this community will suffer.

Solution

Those who are most in need are often the least able to obtain what they need. Until there is a vaccine for COVID-19, HIV-positive transgender youth will have to rely on prevention supplies - which they cannot afford - and their immune systems - which are already compromised. Therefore, nutrition from the relief packages will support their overall health and immune systems, while medical supplies from the relief packages will help prevent the community from acquiring and spreading COVID-19.

Long-Term Impact

The nutrition and medical supplies from these relief packages may very well save lives within HIV-positive transgender youth communities in Multan by supporting those with weakened immune systems and preventing the spread of COVID-19 amongst at-risk and vulnerable communities.
