AWARD started its rehabilitation program with the flood-affected marginalized families of Khairpur, Sindh. The program began with 180 families from six rural areas of District Khairpur and later added 100 families. The families have been made resilient through disaster risk reduction training and Microgrants to encourage women to initiate businesses to get back to their lives; sessions to prevent dengue and malaria; sessions to discourage early-age marriages for girls; vocational training for young, dropout, unskilled girls; and reconstrucción or renovation of the damaged houses.
In an effort to build community resilience and preparedness against floods and emergencies, AWARD Pakistan successfully conducted a toolkit distribution and training activity in Khairpur, Sindh—one of the most flood-affected regions in the country. Participants from six vulnerable villages took part in the initiative, which focused on equipping local communities with essential tools and knowledge to respond effectively during emergencies. Each village formed a Local Flood Relief Committee, whose members received hands-on training on how to use the distributed toolkits, which included emergency rescue and response items tailored to local needs.
The training sessions emphasized practical usage, safety measures, early warning systems, and community coordination during disasters. Participants actively engaged in learning how to safeguard lives, livestock, and property during sudden floods. Following the sessions, the toolkits were officially handed over to the respective Village Committees, ensuring local ownership and sustainability of the initiative.
This community-based disaster preparedness effort empowers local people to act swiftly in times of crisis, reducing reliance on external aid. It reflects AWARD Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening grassroots capacity and supporting the most marginalized communities in managing climate-related risks through education, training, and practical support.
AWARD is thankful to all the donors and supporters who have provided great support to the flood-affected communities. Additionally, AWARD would like to strongly request all donors to continue helping the communities because there is a great need.
