Street Child Espana aims to provide with remote learning materials and sanitation packages 1,562 children of rural areas in Nepal. With the materials provided they will be able to continue their studies, avoiding a complete cut-off from the education system that would otherwise happen. In addition, these children will be provided with sanitation packages to reduce the risk of infection and transmission of COVID-19.
Nepal has undergone one of the longest lockdowns in the world, leaving millions of children without access to education. Interrupted learning and less time being taught by a teacher, can have an adverse impact on the development of children. Moreover, Nepal ranks at the bottom quarter of countries in terms of internet availability and affordability; online learning is inconceivable, especially in rural areas and, as a consequence, children are completely cut-off from access to learning.
Street Child will record lessons in the local language and distribute solar radios and readers so children in rural areas have access to remote instruction and can continue their education. In addition, parents and caregivers will be contacted via SMS to supervise and complement learning. Together with learning packages, sanitation packages will also be distributed to help prevent the risk of infection and transmission of COVID-19.
Without being deprived of access to education, the risk of permanent drop-out will greatly diminish. In turn, reducing the likeliness of a long-term loss of learning for an entire generation of learners will avoid a reversal of decades of advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and will as well reduce economic, social and political impacts.
