Challenge

The Atlantic Forest and Caatinga biomes, located in Northeastern Brazil, shelter several rare and endangered species, also providing essential resources for vulnerable populations living in this region. Their few forest remnants are under severe threats due to deforestation and unsustainable use of natural resources. We urge to draw attention to Northeastern biomes and communities, so neglected in the environmental and social agendas, by restoring key forest areas and promoting long-term change.

Solution

This project will plant 200,000 seedlings on priority areas for native species' protection, allied to ecosystem services improvement. This will secure water and food for local communities under a sustainable perspective in both biomes, while controlling harsh ongoing climate change effects in the region, as desertification and heat islands. We will also prioritize local suppliers for the provision of inputs and services for activities, moving the regional restoration productive chain forward.

Long-Term Impact

Planting 200,000 trees will enable the restoration of 120 hectares of native forests in the Northeast of Brazil, potentially increasing habitat amount, connectivity and quality for over 500 currently endangered species of fauna and flora; providing co-benefits for over 200 local families with access to more abundant, sustainable natural resources in climate-resilient landscapes; and also promoting socio-economic change for at least 50 people directly involved in the restoration productive chain.
