The world is moving in a direction that gives us deep concern. Every day we are forced to name some of the greatest evils of our time: war, genocide, the repression of historically marginalized groups, cuts to public assistance, and the lack of accountability for those trapped between violence and poverty. Amid these global crises, the housing emergency continues to grow. Too often it is overlooked, yet it remains one of the most urgent struggles of our time.
At Ayuda Legal Puerto Rico, we hold an ethical responsibility to continue defending the right to dignified housing and fair rentals. This means ensuring the right to live in safe and adequate homes—whether in private or public housing—and protecting families against unjust evictions.
In recent months, we have witnessed alarming trends: rising rents, intensified police activity targeting residents of public housing, new waves of evictions, and policies designed to leave immigrant families without shelter. Even more troubling, a new regulatory framework requires Puerto Ricans—most of whom are Spanish speakers—to file Fair Housing Act complaints in English in order to access remedies for discrimination.
Faced with this reality, legal accompaniment rooted in empowerment is not optional—it is urgent. That is why we continue to expand our efforts: hiring a new attorney to strengthen our work, insisting on education, and advancing advocacy to transform the conditions faced by tenant families.
We cannot do this without you. As organizations face shrinking capacity to respond to the blows of this historic moment, individual donors remain essential. We invite you to donate—and, if possible, to increase your donation—so we can continue moving forward.
For housing justice, there is no turning back.
