Summary

One in every five girls in Colombia between 15 to 19 years are or have been pregnant, according to government figures and experts say teenage pregnancy in Colombia is fueled by a lack of information. ACESWorld P4L gives Colombian and Venezuelan adolescents in Colombia the information they need to make informed decisions about their bodies and future. We also provide Spanish language reproductive health resources for schools and teach girls how to manage their periods with dignity.

Challenge

Adolescent pregnancy contributes to the cycle of poverty, exclusion, and marginalization, as children born to adolescent mothers are also at elevated risk of poverty and poor health outcomes, including early pregnancy. One in every five girls in Colombia between 15 to 19 years are or have been pregnant, according to government figures. Experts say teenage pregnancy in Colombia is fueled by a lack of information, cultural taboos around sexuality, pregnancy and a woman's role in society.

Solution

ACESWorld P4L goes to schools and teaches adolescents about reproductive health, human reproductive anatomy and gives adolescents a forum to ask questions that they may not be comfortable asking the adults in their lives. We explain the male and female reproductive systems, give girls period calendars, and teach them how to sew reusable sanitary pads. P4L discusses the health risks associated with early pregnancy and gives adolescents the power to make informed reproductive health decisions.

Long-Term Impact

1. The P4L project will educate 400 adolescent students about reproductive health to reduce teen pregnancy and give girls greater access to economic opportunity. 2. The P4L project will help 200 adolescent girls make reusable sanitary pads to manage their periods with dignity. 3. The P4L project will provide reproductive health reference materials for 20 schools.
