A Second Chance: Sunidhi's Journey of Resilience, Hope and New Beginnings*
*Name changed to protect the child's identity.

At an age when most children are learning to trust the world, Sunidhi had already lost it twice.

She lost her biological parents when she was very young. A couple adopted her, and for a while she may have believed she had finally found a home. Then, for reasons no one could explain to her, her adoptive parents abandoned her. A little girl who had already lost so much was once again alone and in need of care and protection.

After some time at another shelter home, Sunidhi arrived at Salaam Baalak Trust's Girls home - Aaushi, at the age of nine. She was quiet and withdrawn, carrying a weight no child should have to carry. She did not speak much, and it was clear that opening up to anyone felt unsafe.

At Aarushi Home, no one hurried her. She found a safe, nurturing space, and mental health counselling gave her room to heal at her own pace. Slowly, she began to find her voice. Our Non-Formal Education programme met her where she was, giving her academic and emotional support so she could learn without fear of falling behind.

As her confidence grew, so did her progress. She was enrolled in a formal school in the neighbourhood, and her steady effort soon earned her a place in a better school in Gurugram. The child who once hardly spoke was now thriving in a classroom.

Today, Sunidhi is in Class 11, studying Humanities. She has also become a gifted young artist. Through art and craft she expresses what words once could not, and her imagination and creativity are plain in everything she makes. She dreams of studying Fine Arts and building a career around her passion.

Why her story matters

Sunidhi's talent was always there. What she needed was someone to give her the chance to discover it. Without a safe home, counselling and education, a child with her early losses could easily have been left behind. Her story shows what becomes possible when a child is given safety, care, patience and belief.

There are many children like Sunidhi who are waiting for someone to give them that chance. Every meal, every counselling session, every classroom seat and every art supply is a step towards a second chance for a child who has already faced more than her share of loss.

Sunidhi's journey reminds us that a child's circumstances do not have to define her future, and that with the right support, even the hardest beginnings can lead to hope.
