Introduction

Children in Hazardous Work

The Street Children Empowerment Foundation (SCEF) is pleased to present a progress report for the "Rescue, Rebuild, Reimagine: Street Kids' Future" campaign. This initiative supports our flagship program, "Our Children in Hazardous Work" (CHaW), which harnesses the power of education to empower street-connected children. Through the 3R approach – Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration – SCEF unlocks their potential and facilitates a brighter future.

Progress Highlights (January - April 2024)

• Rescue: Our social service team successfully rescued seven children from hazardous environments, providing them with immediate care and support.
• Rehabilitation: Four children actively participate in rehabilitation programs, receiving essential educational and emotional support to transition to a stable environment. We acknowledge the ongoing challenge of maintaining engagement, as three children have discontinued participation.
• Reintegration: We are proud to report Abla's successful school enrollment. Additionally, four other children are nearing mainstream education, signifying significant progress in their reintegration journey.

The 3R Methodology in Action

1. Rescue

Progress

• We maintain consistent communication with parents, emphasizing the importance of regular school attendance for academic success.
• We collaborate with the CGE Social Service team and the Centre for Grassroots Enterprise to ensure parents meet SCEF criteria, fostering effective child support.

2. Rehabilitation

• Trained instructors conduct counseling sessions to address the children's psychosocial needs.
• Juliet, from Usher Polyclinic, leads the counseling efforts, providing crucial emotional support.

3. Reintegration

• Challenge: Economic constraints prevent some parents from providing daily meals for their children during rehabilitation sessions.
• Solution: SCEF is actively developing solutions to address these economic barriers and ensure continued support for the children's educational journey.

Way Forward

• To ensure consistent attendance and structured participation in rehabilitation classes, the social service team will conduct random and regular visits to the homes of rescued children. This allows for monitoring and follow-up on their home situations.

• A reliable psychologist has been secured from Ussher Hospital to address the emotional and psychological needs of the children, thereby enhancing their overall well-being.

• A structured approach has been implemented to engage with the parents of rescued children, allowing for the identification and discussion of their concerns and problems. This facilitates the development of suitable plans to support the families of the rescued children.
