From The Street Into Graduation Gowns - CHAW Report

By Solomon Abbey | Child Rights Advocate

Progress Highlights (May - August 2024)

Rescue: Our social service team continues to work diligently, rescuing an additional four street-connected children during this quarter. These children have been successfully reintegrated into Smile House, a private boarding school providing a safe and supportive environment.

Rehabilitation: A reliable psychologist from Ussher Hospital has been secured to address the emotional and psychological needs of both the children and their parents. Counseling sessions are conducted three times a week, ensuring that the children receive the necessary support to navigate their experiences.

Reintegration: We proudly report that nine children from our past cohort have graduated from high school, showcasing the success of our ongoing efforts. Additionally, parents and guardians are playing an increasingly vital role in ensuring their children attend rehabilitation classes, further supporting their educational journeys. We also secured birth certificates for 15 beneficiaries, a crucial step in their path toward full integration.

The 3R Methodology in Action

1. Rescue

  • Progress: In collaboration with our partners and through consistent community outreach, we have successfully reintegrated four children into the Smile House. This private boarding school provides a nurturing environment that fosters growth and stability. Additionally, our social workers have conducted regular home visits to facilitate further rescues and identify children in need.

2. Rehabilitation

  • Counseling and Support: With the addition of a reliable psychologist from Ussher Hospital, we now offer counseling sessions three times a week for both the children and their parents. This consistent support has been crucial in addressing the children's emotional and psychological needs.
  • Engagement Strategies: To address some children's reluctance toward classroom activities, our team has incorporated play-based learning methods. This approach has proven effective in keeping the children engaged and motivated in their learning journey.

3. Reintegration

  • Milestones Achieved: We are thrilled to report that nine children from our past cohort have successfully graduated from high school, marking a significant milestone in their reintegration journey. This achievement highlights the impact of our programs and the dedication of our team.
  • Parental Involvement: Parents and guardians are increasingly involved in the rehabilitation process, ensuring their children's consistent participation in rehab classes. This involvement is pivotal in reinforcing the importance of education and providing a stable support system.
  • Birth Certification: In this quarter, we have secured birth certificates for 15 beneficiaries, a vital step in ensuring their access to basic rights and services.

Way Forward

To maintain the momentum and further improve our programs:

  • Regular Monitoring: Our social service team will continue conducting random and regular home visits to ensure ongoing support for the rescued children and to identify others in need.
  • Enhanced Engagement: We will expand our play-based learning activities to keep children engaged and excited about their education.
  • Parent Workshops: Plans are underway to implement workshops for parents, equipping them with tools and strategies to support their children's educational and emotional needs.

Conclusion

SCEF is committed to transforming the lives of street-connected children through education and support. This quarter's achievements, including reintegrating children into the Smile House and the graduation of our past cohort, underline the importance of community collaboration, consistent support, and innovative approaches. Your continued support is crucial to sustaining and expanding our efforts, ensuring every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
