Christmas Carol Celebration and Hamper Sharing

By Solomon Abbey | Child Rights Advocate

Introduction

On December 20, 2024, the Street Children Empowerment Foundation (SCEF) proudly hosted its inaugural Christmas Carol and hamper sharing event. This festive gathering brought together 200 children from SCEF Jamestown and its surrounding areas, fostering a spirit of unity and celebration within the community. The event attracted a vibrant mix of stakeholders, including dignitaries, social workers, volunteers, and families, all eager to partake in the joyous occasion.

Event Overview

The festivities kicked off early in the morning, with social workers and national service personnel arriving at the SCEF premises to set the stage for a day filled with joy and camaraderie. The event saw participation from seven members of the RoadE Church, three national service personnel, five volunteers, 27 parents, 200 SCEF beneficiaries, and three invited guests, all contributing to the lively atmosphere.

Opening Activities

As guests arrived, a warm and inviting ambiance enveloped the gathering. Emmanuella Vanderpuye led an opening prayer, inviting blessings and setting a reflective tone for the day. Following this heartfelt prayer, Paul Semeh, the Executive Director and Founder of SCEF, delivered a stirring welcome address. He emphasized the importance of community and extended gratitude to all attendees for their unwavering support.

Performances and Readings

The program featured an array of engaging performances and readings designed to uplift spirits and spread holiday cheer:

Carol Singing: The Charley Vibez & Smile Team took to the stage, delighting the audience with beloved Christmas classics like "Joy to the World," "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," and "12 Days of Christmas." Their vibrant performance filled the venue with festive joy.

Bible Readings: The program continued with a series of Bible readings, showcasing the talents of our participants:

The first three readings were shared by Emmanuella Vanderpuye, Nurath Al-Razak, and P.K. Appiah Korang.

The next set was led by Mary Lamptey, Beatrice Anu, and Agnes Acquah.

Finally, Loising Tackie, Solomon Narh, and Joel Amoequaye completed the readings, creating a meaningful connection to the spirit of the season.

Dance Performances: Following the readings, the Accra Dance Movement took the stage, captivating the audience with an electrifying dance performance. Their energy inspired other children and staff to showcase their own dancing prowess, adding to the excitement of the day.

Poem Recital: The Children’s Parliament moved the audience with a beautiful poem recital, celebrating themes of unity and hope, and reinforcing the message of togetherness.

Additional Carol Singing: SCEF staff joined in the festivities with a rendition of "O Come All Ye Faithful," enhancing the festive atmosphere even further.

Sermon and Birthday Celebration

Reverend Barimah Appiah Korang from the RoadE Church delivered a thought-provoking sermon that encouraged attendees to embrace the spirit of giving and community. Adding a personal touch to the celebration, we honored Toyin’s birthday, which brought an extra layer of joy to the occasion.

The Accra Dance Movement followed with another impressive performance, complemented by a delightful Christmas drama presented by the SMILE House team. Their vibrant costumes and dynamic dance skills left the audience applauding and heightened the overall excitement of the event.

Closing Activities

As the event drew to a close, Kojo SCEF delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants and organizers for their contributions. The gathering concluded with a closing prayer led by Emmanuella Vanderpuye, blessing all attendees as they prepared to depart.

The celebration reached its zenith with the sharing of gifts, including clothes, snacks, and food, meticulously organized by project coordinator Mrs. Akua Bresiamah. This heartfelt distribution concluded as the children were safely conveyed back to their homes. Meanwhile, the SCEF team gathered for a happy hour to celebrate their achievements and reflect on the day's success.

Acknowledgments

We extend our profound gratitude to our partners, including RoadE Church, Absa Bank, Gold Coast Matcom, Rev. Daniel Hammond, JFC Foundation and Send a Smile, Godparents and Madam Vivian from the Rotary Club of Accra Airport, for their unwavering support in making this event a resounding success. This collaborative effort exemplifies our shared commitment to creating a nurturing community for street-connected children in Ghana.

Conclusion

The Christmas Carol celebration was not just an event; it was a heartfelt expression of community spirit and collective achievement. We are immensely thankful to everyone who contributed to the planning and execution of this memorable day. We eagerly look forward to future gatherings that continue to strengthen our bonds and uplift the lives of children in our community.
