Every night, long-distance drivers arrive in Mbikko, Uganda with money for alcohol, drugs, and women. Young mothers walk the streets because there are no jobs. No other organization is here. BTRMU rescues them. We provide counseling, HIV support, skills training, and business support for two years. Their children stay with them. 130 women rescued. $50,000 rescues 15 more. One woman saved. Her children saved.
Every night, long-distance drivers arrive in Mbikko, Uganda with money for alcohol, drugs, and women. Young mothers walk the streets because there are no jobs. 90% are HIV positive. Their babies are left with neighbors. Older children become street kids. No other organization is here. The cycle never ends. Women lose hope, dignity, and their children. Girls grow up to enter the same trade. Without help, nothing changes.
We go to lodges, inns, and streets at night. We befriend women and invite them to safety. For 12 months: counseling, art therapy, HIV support, literacy, tailoring, hairdressing, catering, weaving. Then we help them start businesses. We follow up for two years. Children stay with mothers. We pay school fees. Result: She leaves exploitation forever. Keeps her children. Runs her own business.
Within 12 years, all 300 women trapped in exploitation in Mbikko will be permanently free. Each woman will manage her HIV, own a profitable business, and keep her children in school. Not a single child of a rescued woman will ever become a street kid. The cycle ends here. This community becomes proof that freedom is possible - even where there are no jobs.
