Rescue, Rehab and Re-home Street Dogs in Africa

We have so many updates for you so grab a cuppa and sit back and have a read ;)

We were incredibly lucky to welcome 16 Intern's from Spain recently and they spent a day at our rescue centre volunteering and we really needed it! It's been a rough winter in Africa so much so that in Jo'burg they experienced snow, while we didn't have time to play in this rare beautiful climate we was left struggling with extreme storms and wind at our centre, our kennels began to flood and roofs ripped off in the storm left us in danger so our team worked day and night to keep the animals out of the floods but it was tough. 

These Intern's and your donations we managed to purchase waterproofing, paint and general nails and screws to rebuild the centre post storm and it's looking amazing and we have a few more shades to help protect our puppies in the summer that is just around the corner. 

Sadly we have not been able to raise enough money for our township outreach activities so this is the 4th month we have not been able to do it. However our phone has not stopped with emergencies and we have a record number of 51 dogs currently in our care and our team have seen some extremely traumatic events from dogs being abused that we had to remove and protect. Here are a just a few other the last two weeks

Annie, our latest rescue, really upset our team as they were called out to a deplorable Husky puppy that was laying in the road close to the dump and had been discarded like rubbish. Our team rushed out and picking her up and made the decision she needed critical care so took her to a local vet. Annie, this poor puppy had been hit with a paintball gun and attacked with acid. Knowing we didn't have the funds needed but couldn't let her down we have taken credit at the vet and told them to do whatever they can for her. She couldn't walk and was in pain but it is our duty to do what is best, she is responding to treatment and is already looking much better and could even stand up but the vet bill stands at $2,000. We urgently will need to fundraise for this but she is alive and will be back with us ready for rehab and eventually adoption in the future. 

Another innocent puppy we named Viking came to us last month, this sad story really hit our team hard as probably the worst we have seen since we began. We were alerted to an incident by the police and rushed into the township to find a puppy being abused in a way we can't describe by children, it's like nothing we have seen before and this puppy is going to need a lot of special care and rehab to get through this incident. He was also left seriously injured when we arrived and therefore had to spend 2 weeks in the local vet hospital again on credit as we can't say no! So far it has cost us $3,400 and he has only just arrived at our centre to begin rehab so he has a long road ahead.

This is just two of 10 emergencies we were called to over the past two months, we are really seeing an increase and this is why our outreach program is critical too. Education is key to tackling this type of abuse. We have a very busy few months ahead with vet bills at around $25,000 outstanding and more calls for rescues coming in. We are struggling but it is our duty to do whatever we can for these animals and we thank you for supporting us.
