Summary

Sancore Animal Rescue and Shelter, based in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, helps abused, Injured, hungry and stray dogs and cats, who would otherwise be trapped, euthanized, poisoned or eaten, by rescuing and rehoming them. Most of these rescued dogs and cats come to us wounded, abused, or neglected, or are very ill. We have fed and cared for over 800 cats and 1100 dogs the past year, incurring veterinary care and feeding bills of $7,500-$17,500. We are the first animal rescue NGO in Ghana.

Challenge

Did you know that in Accra and suburbs, stray animals live a rough life? Dependent on food scraps from, tourists, chop bar and restaurant owners. Besides finding enough food to eat, strays are also at constant risk of being captured for the cruel dog and cat meat consumption. COVID-19 has worsened the situation, causing a severe food shortage for strays with tourists leaving, chop bars and restaurants closed. With your support, we wish to bring emergency food and medication for these animals.

Solution

There are no rescues and shelters in Ghana to protect the numerous stray, abandoned and abused cats and dogs. There are also no official programs for neutering and spaying. Most (over 800 puppies) of the animals are given for adoption to vetted new forever homes. We do not euthanize animals to control population. We advocate humane spay/neuter programs for population control and to reduce cruelty that arises from overpopulation and stray animals. vaccinating stray dogs and cats against rabies.

Long-Term Impact

Our goal is to reduce suffering and advocate humane behaviour through providing feeding, rescue, and sanctuary to abandoned, neglected and abused dogs and cats; to medically rehabilitate all rescued dogs and cats; to develop low-cost spay-neuter and vaccination programs; to provide education and awareness about the problems we address, (animal cruelty, feral breeding and the importance of spay/neuter for animal welfare) The last but not the least is to help solve the rabies problem.
