Update: Rescuing Through the Rain

By Craig Grant | Executive Director, TOLFA UK

Monsoon has arrived in Rajasthan — and with it, the most challenging weeks of the year for our rescue and care teams.

This season brings with it more than just rain. Roads flood, rivers burst their banks, and access to animals in need becomes difficult and dangerous. Our team wades through knee-deep water, often carrying injured animals across unstable ground because our vehicles can’t reach them. Even inside the shelter, slick floors and waterlogged sand make every step a careful one.

Every year during the monsoon, we see a surge in animals suffering from road traffic accidents and maggot-infested wounds. The rains drive animals onto the roads, where visibility is low and traffic doesn’t slow down. Dogs clipped by fast-moving vehicles, cows lying on tarmac for warmth, and young calves collapsing from cold and hunger — these are the calls we respond to every day.

Rescues take longer. Wounds take longer to heal. And those animals who were already just about coping — the elderly, the very young, the malnourished — begin to fail. Each day, we’re fighting to give them the care, warmth, and treatment they need to survive.

But through all of this, we carry on. The spirit and determination of our team never wavers. Staff travel over 20km through flooded, pothole-ridden roads just to get to work — arriving soaked, cold, and ready to care for animals who need them more than ever. It’s tough, exhausting, and relentless. And yet every single day, they show up — and keep their promise to the animals.

There are glimmers of hope. Thanks to generous donors on this platform, we recently completed vital rain-proofing works on one of our largest kennel blocks. That means 60 animals are safer this monsoon. It’s a powerful reminder of what we can achieve together.

We’ll continue sharing updates as the monsoon season unfolds — the challenges, the small victories, and the lives you help us save. Thank you, from all of us, for being part of this.
