Several shocking events have focused critical attention on women’s safety in Ecuador during the early months of 2019.
The tragic and public murder of Diana, a young pregnant woman killed by her former lover, came just days after the news of Martha and her brutal, vicious gang rape by three man and countless objects. Women and men in Ecuador took to the streets in January to march in support of women’s rights and to rally against the systemic abuse of women and girls, and the pervasive silence of Ecuadorian society.
Your support for Mirame and women’s empowerment these past few months has come at a time of needed and vital investment for our Ecuadorian sisters. In response to such heartbreaking events and the community outpouring for change, Mirame has organized a 4-part series of workshops dedicated to women’s safety.
Led by volunteer leaders, Mirame’s workshops for women’s safety include themes on: creating a space of physical safety when confronted with violence, releasing trauma from the emotional and physical body, personal self-defense training, and a dialogue circle for survivors of sexual violence with the option of on-going support. While the formal dates are still being coordinated with our volunteer leaders, we are so grateful for your generosity in creating such essential, services to our sisters and community at such an important time.
Mirame is also establishing a new partnership with Espacio de Co-Escucha to ensure that women can come to monthly and quarterly support groups so no woman ever has to feel alone in the challenges they are facing. This is the second strategic alliance of Mirame, following the partnership with Kallpa Warmi, an agricultural collective for rural women. With your influence and vital encouragement, Mirame will continue to grow and help women find the courage, and the social network, needed to transform their lives from the inside out.
Thank you for being a catalyst for such inspiring transformations.
