Anghaqueno village on Rubane Island, Guinea-Bissau, home to 748 residents, faces unsafe water, food insecurity, poor nutrition, and limited health and sanitation services. Often neglected by mainstream support, the community relies on two damaged wells that expose families to waterborne diseases and limit livelihoods, education, and gender equality. In partnership with Silversea Expeditions, this community-led project will build safe wells, promote climate-smart agriculture and sanitation.
Anghaqueno village faces severe, interconnected challenges: unsafe water from only two traditional wells exposes residents to waterborne diseases; limited water restricts agriculture, worsening food and nutrition insecurity, especially for women and children; poor sanitation and hygiene increase disease spread; and women and children spend hours collecting water, limiting education, income, and participation. These issues undermine health, livelihoods, education, and overall community resilience
WellFound Guinea Bissau will deliver an integrated, community-led package addressing root causes: safe water through new or rehabilitated wells and trained water committees; food and nutrition support via climate-smart agriculture, high-yield seeds, organic fertiliser, and community gardens; and health and sanitation improvements with latrines and hygiene training. All activities emphasise local ownership, collective benefit, and long-term sustainability based on 20 years of experience.
The project will improve health by reducing waterborne and hygiene-related diseases, enhance food and nutrition security through diverse household production, strengthen livelihoods via higher agricultural productivity and income opportunities, promote gender equity by reducing women's time burdens, establish sustainable village committees for water, agriculture, and sanitation, and foster collective prosperity and resilience to withstand future environmental and economic shocks.
