Challenge

As of 2020, Kenya hosted 490,000 refugees & asylum-seekers, over half of whom are under 18-years-old. More than 211,000 refugees & asylum seekers currently live in the Dadaab complex. Access to education and resources in the refugee camps is limited. It is estimated that half of the children there are NOT enrolled in school. The reasons for low enrollment vary greatly: the distance to travel to get to the classroom, lack of trained teachers and a plethora of social, cultural & economic factors.

Solution

Our solution is designed to provide quality education materials to communities lacking connectivity and resources. TBT's offline digital library includes carefully curated audiobooks, digital books and custom videos. Users download content to smart devices via the internal wi-fi of the device. For those lacking smart devices, we have integrated a projector into our offline digital library, allowing teachers & community orgs to share these with individuals or groups on demand.

Long-Term Impact

The project will provide education resources to 175 children and youth, improving proficiency in literacy and numeracy. It will provide teacher training and supplements to 10 adults. Children lacking access to education and resources when they are young, are less likely to go to school or continue school, significantly reducing their employment opportunities as adults. Educating refugee children leads to better health outcomes, better social outcomes, and more stable families and communities.
