Summary

Transforming Community for Social Change responds with effective programs at the grassroots level to political, tribal, and other conflicts in western Kenya. These responses include alternatives to violence, trauma healing and reconciliation, non-violent direct action, mediation, community dialogues, and listening sessions. The goal is to keep conflicts from escalating through retaliation and revenge. Thousands of Kenyans are involved in these peace sessions.

Challenge

In a country where security forces and the judicial system are ineffective and often corrupt, people who are aggrieved often resort to violent retaliation. This quickly leads to counter-retaliation and the community can explode into major violence with destruction of property and sometimes to deaths. In some cases these conflicts are tribal or ethnically based which can lead to greater community violence.

Solution

TCSC has over 1000 citizen reporters connected to a Call-in Center to report on violence in a community. TCSC quickly visits the affected community, holding a listening session where both sides can air their grievances and details of the conflict. The staff then determines and implements the best strategy to intervene in the community to resort calm and normal relationships. As a longer term preventive measure plans are developed with the community on how to respond to subsequent conflicts.

Long-Term Impact

A violent conflict in a community affects at least 1000 people who are the recipients of the peacebuilding activities. Frequently the conflicts have deeper roots and by bringing past injustices and conflicts to the surface peaceful coexistence in enhanced. Strategies to confront subsequent violence in the community leads to peaceful resolutions of conflicts without retaliation and escalation. TCSC remains involved in the communities for years in order to build up firm foundations for peace.
