International Medical Corps was first to respond to the earthquake that struck the Gayan district of Paktika on June 22, 2022. Health teams, staff, and ambulances from neighboring districts mobilized to support the significant and immediate need for critical trauma care, allowing International Medical Corps and local health authorities to treat hundreds of patients in the hours immediately following the quake.
In the weeks and months that followed, International Medical Corps partnered with the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund (AFH) and UNICEF to provide lifesaving medical care and WASH services to 2,346 people, 2,407 hygiene kits (benefiting 16,840 people), hygiene promotion to 11,998 people, as well as 21,000 aqua tabs, 178 plastic water storage tanks (each tank can provide clean water and improved hygiene standards for 6-8 households), and 1,822 winterization kits, each containing 3 double-sized thermal blankets.
