Hawaii Marine Animal Response is raising money to enhance our Rescue & Stranding Response Program on Oahu. HMAR staff and volunteers work 365 days a year to save Hawaii's marine species like the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, dolphins, sea turtles, seabirds, and whales. Your donations will buy important supplies that allow us to save hundreds of animals per year, support recovery of endangered wildlife populations, and preserve the health of the ocean ecosystem for future generations.
Hawaii is home to a disproportionate number of marine species threatened with extinction due to increasing coastal development, habitat loss, marine debris, pollution, and disease. Every day we receive reports of injured or distressed marine life, such as Hawaiian monk seals and sea turtles, in need of help. We rescue these animals and return them to the ocean to resume their role in maintaining ecosystem health and contribute to the recovery of critically important wildlife populations.
HMAR has been responding to reports of marine life in need since 2016. During that time, we have become the first-agency responder for more than 15 species of marine animals along Hawaii's coastline. This project will support the purchase of supplies and equipment that we use to rescue animals that are injured, entangled, or in distress. This equipment further enhances our capacity to provide advanced training to our dedicated team of volunteers, interns, and staff members.
Rescuing individual animals and returning them to the ocean allows them to resume their role in maintaining a balanced, healthy ecosystem and contributes to the recovery of critically important wildlife populations. At an individual level, saving these animals supports long-term population recovery of declining species. However, many of these species play a key role in the balance of a healthy ocean ecosystem. If we support their recovery, we are also supporting the health of oceans and humans.
