This project aims to provide education, vocational training and rehabilitation support to girls who are victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation in Nepal. Free a Girl seeks to support these girls with the tools that they need to become economically and socially independent and to create sustainable, positive change in their lives.
Poverty and poor education and employment opportunities in Nepal, particularly in rural communities, are key contributing factors to the trafficking of children and women for sexual exploitation. Existing gender-based discrimination in Nepal also often undermines the availability of opportunities for girls and women to become empowered and economically active. This also makes them significantly vulnerable to violence, trafficking and exploitation.
We provide restoration and education for 36 girls who are victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation. The girls will benefit from formal or non-formal education (based on their needs and interests), vocational training (such as tailoring and beautician courses), job recruitment and life-skills trainings and regular dance therapy classes, at a shelter home in Kathmandu. They also receive shelter, food, clothing, medical check-ups, legal support and help with reintegrating into the community.
Such comprehensive services is required in order to meet the complex needs of these girls and to build their self-confidence, empowerment and independence. In the long term, we hope to support these girls with the tools to become economically and socially independent and to create sustainable, positive change in their lives. Free a Girl believes education and training is a fundamental right for all girls as well as a key prevention and rehabilitation strategy for vulnerable and trafficked girls.
