Restoring Ecosystems

By Development Alert | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Thanks to your generous support, we are contributing to the restoration of degraded Lake Victoria shores in Mayuge District, Eastern Uganda, through community-led tree planting and environmental conservation initiatives.

Lake Victoria is a lifeline for millions of people, supporting livelihoods, providing fish and water resources, and sustaining biodiversity. However, parts of its shoreline have suffered from environmental degradation, vegetation loss, soil erosion, and growing pressure from human activities. These challenges threaten fragile ecosystems and the communities that depend on them for their daily survival. Restoring these degraded areas is therefore essential for protecting biodiversity, strengthening climate resilience, and safeguarding livelihoods for future generations.

Through this restoration initiative, Development Alert, working alongside Mayuge District Local Government and beneficiary communities, is supporting the resotation of 3500 hectares mainly  planting local trees alongside indigenous grasses, across degraded sections of the Lake Victoria shoreline. More than 100 households have also received tree seedlings, helping families participate directly in environmental restoration while creating opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.

This work is about much more than planting trees. Vegetation helps stabilize vulnerable soils, reduce erosion, protect shoreline habitats, and contribute to healthier ecosystems. By involving local communities, we are also encouraging a stronger sense of environmental ownership and responsibility. Families are not simply receiving seedlings; they are becoming active partners in protecting the natural resources that sustain their communities.

We believe lasting conservation begins when communities have the knowledge, resources, and opportunity to take action. By supporting restoration today, we are helping create a future in which Lake Victoria's shores are greener, local biodiversity is better protected, and communities are more resilient to environmental challenges.

Thank you for standing with us in this important mission. Your support makes community-led environmental action possible and helps turn degraded landscapes into places of renewed hope. Together, we can protect Lake Victoria, restore nature, and leave a healthier environment for generations to come.

With gratitude,

Development Alert
