Summary

Cerro de Pasco has been listed by Time Magazine as one of the ten most polluted places on earth. According to previous studies, 100% of the population should be urgently hospitalized for the level of their metals in the blood. The main responsible for these impacts is the gigantic Raul Rojas mine. The aim of this study is to further investigate the impacts that mine on health and use these data in order to obtain remediation for local communities through judicial and non-judicial mechanisms.

Challenge

Cerro de Pasco, Peru has been listed as one of the ten most polluted places on earth by Times Magazine. According to a study conducted in 2009 in the region, some metals were detected in water sources at concentrations up to 1,000 times the WHO limit while 100 percent of the population should have been urgently hospitalized for high blood level metals if WHO standards were applied. The severe pollution can be attributed to an openpit mining operation at the center of the community.

Solution

Improve the environmental health condition of Cerro de Pasco, Peru. To reach this goal, Source needs to work alongside the community to collect data demonstrating the effects of mining pollution to the region. The main actions are: perform scientific study on the quality of water, air, soils, food and community members' exposition; use the data to formally file complaints to the UN Special Rapporteur on Toxic Wastes and UN Special Rapporteur on Mental and Physical Health.

Long-Term Impact

Source expects to create a positive policy change that can be applied to other mining areas in the country of Peru, which greatly enlarges the impact of the project. Trained promoters will perform basic environmental and social monitoring system for long-term project success. The total beneficiaries are almost 100,000 including, that will keep knowledge received, carrying on the protection of their environment, health and social system.
