Benitah spends his afternoons barefoot on the cracked roadside outside her home building, watching the hours pass. The school library is closed after school is let out, and the homework is done at night on a full moon or candle.
Inside, the silence is heavy. Her mother works at neighbors homes washing their clothes and cleaning their houses to earn something to support her children, her tired smile his only guide. The school books purchasing, and other necessities feels like a mountain too steep to climb. The math on the page blurs—concepts he missed when he was out sick, with no one to catch her up. The quiet becomes a roar of frustration, then a dull resignation. She shuts the book.
She sees his classmates post science fair projects and band concert shows at school. A canyon widens, not of talent, but of access. Her own spark—a curiosity about science, a knack for drawing—human body parts, slowly dimming under the weight of simple, profound neglect.
This is the story of absence. It’s the potential that never finds its path, the question that goes unanswered, the quiet disconnection from a world that moves forward without you. It’s the cost of what isn’t there: the guide, the tool, the safe space, the chance.
Without support, a child doesn’t just stand still. They fall behind, watching their own future recede.
