Summary

Project supports 360 Ogoni farmers under COVID-19 effects within oil polluted communities through training in alternative livelihoods agriculture on livestock, food crop, and aquaculture (i.e. poultry, piggery, fishery, snail-farming, and mushroom growing) for food support and socio-economic adaptation; forming investment learning groups of 90 members (each of the four Local Government Areas); mentoring on enterprise start-up; farmers' cooperative registration; products processing; and markets.

Challenge

Ogonis are agrarian with land/coastal vegetation for livelihoods fishing/farming. But local agriculture reduced food supply under oil/gas impact -crude oil exploration since 1956 with land grab, degradation, polluted water/air. Current climate change and COVID-19 locked-down added effects caused food scarcity/severe hunger, unemployment and high poverty ranked over 70% where locals loss indigenous livelihoods; to suffer joblessness, malnutrition, rising prices/unhealthy food, and health issues

Solution

It will train 360 Ogoni farmers in alternative livelihoods agriculture in poultry, piggery, fishery, snail farming, and mushroom growing on home based knowledge/skills for increased food (nutrition) and improved income through adaptive production species, site selection, construction, feeds/feeding, common diseases/prevention, harvesting, produce processing, packaging, marketing, business accounting and bio-safety/wastes added benefits; with self-employment enterprising in farmers

Long-Term Impact

The 360 Ogoni farmers in livelihoods farms will ultimately form a model self-investment enterprising/self-employment orientation for equipping rural people facing hunger and poverty to attain food support/nutrition, poverty reduction, low-status reversal, and livelihoods restoration for better diet, job creation, good personal health, and market linkages on national economic development. Thus changing over-dependence on land resources/oil causing further biodiversity losses to adaptation shifts.
