In recent years, Uganda has seen a sharp rise in the effects of climate change, from frequent floods to long periods of drought. These climate disasters are not only damaging homes and crops, but also disrupting children’s access to education with girls being the most affected.
At Joy for Children Uganda, we are witnessing how climate-related crises are creating new barriers for girls who are already struggling to stay in school. In rural and underserved communities, many families depend on farming. When crops fail due to drought or flooding, families lose their income and are forced to make difficult choices. Sadly, educating a girl child is often no longer seen as a priority in such times.
We have seen cases where girls are withdrawn from school to help at home, walk longer distances in search of water, or even get married early in exchange for dowry as families try to survive. In some flood-affected areas, schools are damaged or roads become impassable, and girls are left at home for weeks or months. Many never return to class.
Girls who drop out of school because of climate-related challenges are more likely to face early pregnancy, violence, and a cycle of poverty that becomes hard to break. This is not just an educational problem it is a crisis that affects their health, safety, and future.
During our field visits in July, several schools in West Nile and Northern Uganda reported increased absenteeism among girls after heavy rains cut off access to the communities. Teachers also shared concerns about growing numbers of girls who are missing meals at school due to food shortages at home, caused by failed harvests. Hunger, long distances, and emotional stress are all making it harder for girls to concentrate and succeed in their studies.
Despite these challenges, many girls remain eager to learn. They show up with determination even when the odds are against them. What they need is a stable and supportive environment one that can withstand the shocks of climate change and protect their right to education.
