Every year in Kasese District in western part of Uganda, floods rip through the valleys, creating a path of destruction and burying people's homes, land and livelihoods. Leaving many displaced and in dire need of food, shelter and safety. Not even schools are spared, putting children at risk and leaving them without safe spaces to learn. We discover the challenges the community faces as they strive to recover from the devastating impact of heavy rainfall.
Early May 2023 the Uganda Red Cross Society reported at least 6 people died after heavy rain triggered landslides in the district in Western Uganda Region. Five members of the same family died when a landslide struck their home in Biizi village in Murora Sub-County. Another person died in a separate incident in another village, also in Murora Sub-County. One person was injured and taken to hospital.
John ( not real name), a 12-year-old who is a Primary Six pupil of Kisabu Primary School is sad that his classroom is no more.
“Before the floods, our classrooms were good. We had benches and many things, but all these were taken by the floods” He says
John who stays with her father a few meters from the school narrates that the neighborhood woke up to “a shock.”
“In place of the school we found a very big river. Some of our books at school are gone. The water destroyed my classroom and another building. Most of the things we use at school are gone. Our firewood, benches, teachers’ chairs, our beautiful playground – all gone,”
Due to floods destroying the schools, learners have been accommodated in temporary tents. The construction of new schools in safer locations has not started yet as there are no finances allocated for these constructions. The rehabilitation and rebuilding of damaged infrastructure has presented a significant challenge for the government, as climate change-induced disasters persistently impact the nation.
Joy for Children –Uganda reached out to the affected schools and delivered scholastic materials, food items and beddings to 50 households. We still need to support more families to recover from the after effects the floods.
Kindly donate to support our cause.
