LRBT treats over 3.4 million patients annually, including more than 1.7 million women from extremely poor backgrounds. Women account for 52% of LRBT’s patient base. Many are mothers, caregivers, and essential contributors to their families and communities, earning livelihoods through farming, teaching, craftsmanship, and other vital work. Yet, preventable and treatable blindness can threaten their independence, productivity, and quality of life.
Through this project, LRBT aims to restore sight to 1,500 women, helping them reclaim their independence, strengthen their livelihoods, and live with dignity.
Take the story of Shenaz, a 46-year-old mother of four from Landhi, Karachi, who found joy in embroidery. Creating intricate patterns with delicate threads was more than a pastime—it gave her a sense of purpose and allowed her to express her creativity.
But when cataracts developed in both eyes, the patterns she once stitched with ease became increasingly difficult to see. Her deteriorating vision threatened not only a cherished skill but also her independence and ability to remain productive.
Shenaz sought help at LRBT, where an examination confirmed cataracts in both eyes. Through LRBT’s free eye care services, she received access to the treatment she needed without the financial burden that might otherwise have placed it beyond her reach.
With improved vision, Shenaz could look forward to returning to her embroidery, regaining confidence in her abilities, and enjoying the meaningful activity she loved.
Shenaz’s journey reflects the reality faced by thousands of women whose lives can be transformed through timely, accessible eye care. By supporting LRBT’s mission to restore sight to 1,500 women, GlobalGiving donors are helping fight avoidable blindness and giving women the opportunity to live more independent, productive, and dignified lives.
When a woman regains her sight, the impact reaches far beyond her eyes—it touches her family, her livelihood, and her entire community.
