In Orangi town, lives 29 years old Safia. Married to her cousin twelve years ago, she never completed her education and was soon busy raising her three children. Her husband is a helper in a construction company and spends most of his income on his children’s school fees. He hopes to give them the education that he never received.
Safia went to school till eighth grade and she helps supplement the family income by giving tuition to children in their neighborhood. Despite their combined earnings they are not able to save anything but are content that they are not dependent on anyone financially.
Safia was helping her youngest son with his homework one night when she had to constantly rub her right eye for she felt she was unable to see clearly from it. This continued for a couple of days till she finally went for a checkup, the doctor gave her eye drops and said if it doesn’t clear up then she may need surgery. Worried Safia continuously used the eye drops but there was no improvement, having no savings she knew they could not afford a surgery.
Then one day her uncle was visiting and upon hearing her tale took her to LRBT Korangi where he had his cataract surgery a couple of years ago completely free of cost. Safia hoped that she too might have the same luck and upon her visit was told that all those who cannot afford it are treated free of cost.
She had a successful surgery and is back home with her children and remembers LRBT and its kind donors in all her prayers for without them she would have surely remained blind in one eye and her life would have been much different from what it was now.
