“When my husband lost his job due to a fatal accident at work that left him handicapped all we were left with was a 2 roomed rented house, eight children and my self-determination. These were my weapons to fight my life’s battle as I never went to school neither was I equipped with any skill and a war ground of life was ready for me to take me head on. Out of eight of my children four were school going. I promised myself I will come out as a warrior and will never let my children beg for their need” - recalls Sofia.
Days and nights went by sleepless and the poor couple would stay up thinking how to manage expenses as every day was already a struggle in his meagre wages and now that also was gone due to his accident. The savings ended, small assets sold and now to top it they were burdened with loans from relatives.
A good news came to them when a neighbor told them about the canteen in the children’s school was looking for a homemade food supplier. Since Sofia was a good cook the family reciprocated by meeting the management and requesting them to allow her to supply. Her test products got great remarks and the family finally started to earn. Better days started and slowly life was becoming a little normal when Sofia started to feel blurring of objects. This continued for some time and was supplemented with severe eye pain in right eye. She went to a neighborhood doctor who diagnosed cataract and advised to collect Rs. 30,000 and consult an eye hospital which was way beyond her affordability. She couldn’t deliver food on time and started facing issues with school management due to late deliveries. When she shared her misery the administrator of school guided her to visit LRBT for free eye treatment. With hesitation and little hope she visited LRBT eye hospital Korangi and got her free treatment.
Today Sofia supplies food to 3 schools in the neighborhood and her 2 other children have also joined school. Sofia is fully determined to give a better life for her children as to what she lives and owes her self-empowerment to LRBT and its free eye care services for the poor because if she was not able to earn today respectably for her family they all must be on roads and begging otherwise.
