Suraiya back to supporting her family!

By Fauzia Aziz | Manager Resource Development

Suraiya, a housewife had dedicated her life to raising her three daughters. Despite them being unable to make ends meet she ensured that all her daughters attended the local government school. A couple of months ago when her husband, a daily wage earner, lost his job due to Covid-19 lockdown she took matters into her own hands and started a small home cooked meals business. She supplies lunch boxes to offices in their vicinity. Her business had just started to take off when an accident left Suraiya blind in one eye.

She went to the local doctor who prescribed eye drops but after a while she had hazy vision and eventually lost vision in her right eye. Her work started to suffer and there were times when they had to survive on one meal a day. Luckily a relative who was visiting heard about Suraiya's eye ailment and advised her to go to LRBT.

Suraiya was hesitant as they could barely afford to keep the roof over their heads let alone seek treatment. Hoping for the best they came to LRBT where after a thorough examination she was diagnosed with cataract and advised surgery. She hesitantly enquired about the cost and was told treatment is free for those who cannot afford it. Breathing a sigh of relief she came on the prescribed day and had a successful surgery.

Suraiya is back home now and standing on her own two feet once again. Her business has picked up and since the lockdown has eased her husband is also back at work. Everyday she says a prayer for LRBT and its donors for enabling her to live her life independently once again.
