Layton Rahmatulla Benevolent Trust (LRBT) is on a mission to ensure that no man, woman, or child goes blind simply because they cannot afford treatment. Since its inception in 1985, LRBT has provided free, high-quality eye care to more than 60 million patients across Pakistan.

Every year, 3.3 million underprivileged Pakistanis receive treatment at LRBT hospitals and clinics. Of these, 51% are women, equating to almost 1.7 million women annually. Women from low-income households are particularly vulnerable to vision loss, often sacrificing their health for their families. LRBT is committed to inclusive, equitable, and accessible eye care, with a special emphasis on women and children from marginalized communities.

This project aims to restore sight to 1,500 women suffering from curable blindness, primarily due to cataract — the leading cause of blindness in Pakistan. Cataract is treatable, yet thousands of women lose their vision each year because poverty and lack of access stand in their way. For these women, vision loss affects not only their health but also their role as caregivers, contributors to household income, and their personal dignity. Restoring their sight means giving them back their independence, their ability to support their families, and their confidence.

LRBT provides all sight-restoring surgeries completely free of cost, ensuring that poverty is never a barrier to treatment.

Take the example of Rafia, a 47-year-old woman who grew up hearing about LRBT’s compassionate work. Many of her family members, including her parents nearly 40 years ago, received free eye surgeries at LRBT.

Rafia lives in a modest rented home with her husband, who works in a small embroidery factory, and their three children. To support her family, she supplements their income by doing artisan embroidery work. Her earnings help fund her children’s education and meet daily household needs.

When she began experiencing blurred vision due to cataracts in both eyes, life became a daily struggle. Private treatment was far beyond their means. Yet, she remained hopeful and turned to LRBT — the same hospital that once helped her parents.

At LRBT, Rafia was welcomed with compassion, underwent successful cataract surgery free of charge, and regained her sight. Today, she can once again manage her household, contribute to her family’s income, and live with dignity and independence.

Rafia’s story is a powerful reminder of how one surgery can transform not just one life but an entire family.

Your support can help restore the sight of 1,500 women like Rafia, giving them the chance to see, work, and live with dignity. Every surgery is more than a medical procedure — it’s a life transformed.

Together, we can ensure that no woman in Pakistan goes blind simply because she cannot afford treatment.
