Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in Nigeria, leaving thousands unable to work, read, or care for themselves.Surgery can restore sight, yet many poor families cannot afford the cost. This project will provide free cataract surgeries for 500 Nigerians, restoring independence and dignity. With trained doctors and basic surgical equipment, each operation takes less than 30 minutes but transforms a person's life forever.Immediate action will help those living in darkness regain their sights
Over 1 million Nigerians live with avoidable blindness caused by untreated cataracts. Poverty and limited access to surgical care mean many people remain blind even though cataract surgery is safe and effective. Those affected often lose their livelihoods and become dependent on family members, deepening the cycle of poverty. Rural communities suffer most, where hospitals lack equipment and skilled personnel. Without surgery, patients remain trapped in preventable blindness.
The project will fund cataract surgeries for 500 patients in rural and low-income communities. Local hospitals will be supplied with surgical kits, intraocular lenses, and recovery medication. Experienced doctors and nurses will conduct the surgeries, supported by trained volunteers for patient care and follow-up visits. By removing cataracts, patients regain sight and independence. Families will also receive education on eye health to prevent future blindness.
Restoring sight to 500 people reduces dependency and poverty in their households. Patients who regain vision can return to work, care for their families, and participate fully in their communities. Children no longer need to leave school to guide or assist blind parents. Local hospitals strengthened with surgical supplies and training can continue serving more patients after this project. The gift of restored vision creates lasting change for individuals, families, and entire communities.
