BDCA is rehabilitating 10 conflict-damaged schools in Amhara, Ethiopia, to restore safe, healthy, and gender-sensitive learning environments for over 5,000 children. We are repairing classrooms, rebuilding Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities, and providing learning materials-with a focus on keeping girls in school.
Schools across Amhara have been severely damaged by ongoing conflict, leaving classrooms roofless, windows shattered, and furniture destroyed. Thousands of children-especially girls-are learning in unsafe, exposed, and unsanitary conditions. Without functional WASH facilities, girls often miss school or drop out entirely. This destruction has deepened an educational crisis, putting a generation at risk of lost learning, trauma, and lasting poverty.
BDCA will rehabilitate school infrastructure using our proven model of community partnership and gender-sensitive design. We will: Repair roofs, windows, and doors in 10 schools Rebuild gender-segregated latrines and hand washing stations to meet our Foundational Education & School WASH standards Provide desks, blackboards, and learning materials Distribute science equipment to support practical education Engage local communities in the restoration process to ensure sustainability and
Rehabilitating schools is an investment in long-term stability and resilience. Safe schools reduce dropout rates-especially for girls-and restore normalcy for traumatized children. Educated youth are less vulnerable to exploitation and more likely to contribute to peace and economic recovery. By restoring schools today, we are rebuilding the foundation for a stronger, more hopeful Amhara tomorrow.
